NY mayor sends texting message

Hizzoner isn't playing when it comes to distracted driving. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio directed his police detail to stop and cite a motorist for texting while he was traveling on FDR Drive in Manhattan over the weekend. "I just said, ‘Pull her over, take whatever enforcement action you would take in that situation. Give her some on-the-spot education,' " de Blasio told reporters a few days later, while pushing his new traffic safety initiative under the Vision Zero umbrella. "I'm happy to be citizen patrol here," he added. De Blasio said he didn't know if the woman was told the … [Read more...]

Appeals court clears Apple in deadly crash

Apple Inc. did not owe "a duty of care" to the family of a young girl killed in a distracted driving crash, an appeals court has ruled. Apple's design of the iPhone used by the driver was not a "proximate cause" of the Texas highway crash and resulting death of 5-year-old Moriah Modisette, the court said in upholding an earlier ruling. The child's mother and family sued Apple for not warning of dangers from using the FaceTime video and audio feature while driving. The company also did not offer a feature to lock out the application at highway speeds, the 2017 lawsuit said. Apple had … [Read more...]

Manitoba seizing licenses of distracted drivers

In Manitoba, it's now hands on the phone, hand over the driver's license. Drivers distracted by their handheld electronics will see a $672 fine. Repeat offenders (within a decade) will suffer a seven-day license loss. Police will take away the offender’s license on the spot and issue a short-term permit to allow for driving home. The changes went into effect Nov. 1. Offenders in the … [Read more...]

Four states turn up heat on distracted drivers

The halfway point of 2018 brings new distracted driving restrictions to a quartet of states. The change is most significant in Georgia, which gets its first handheld cell phone ban. The new laws and penalties all took effect July 1. In Georgia, drivers must employ hands-free devices if they want to continue using smartphones behind the wheel. A long period of study by lawmakers resulted in a statute that focuses on barring the holding or touching of wireless communications devices. Also newly prohibited are recording videos, and watching videos. Georgia already has a texting & driving law. … [Read more...]

VW uses wrecks to build iPhone cases

Volkswagen Sweden has found a use for the carcasses of vehicles wrecked by distracted drivers: cell phone cases. "Do you know someone who needs a reminder?" a promo video for the startling public-safety campaign asks. The automaker produced 153 "handmade and numbered" cases for iPhone 8s from the wrecked vehicles' mangled metal -- one case for every crash since Sweden enacted a distracted driving law earlier this year. "We believe a phone case made by unfortunate cars makes you think twice before you pick up your phone," said Johan Karlsson of Volkswagen Stockholm. "It will be like a … [Read more...]
