Maryland distracted driving update: A 2020 bill seeks to allow police and related agencies to capture images of distracted drivers. Similar to red-light cameras, the system would send images to suspected offenders via the mail, along notices of the fines. Authorities would be required to post roadway notices that the distracted driving monitoring system is in use. The sponsor is state Sen. Katherine Klausmeier. Texting, cell phone news: Connecticut hiked its fines for distracted driving as of Oct. 1, 2021. First-time fines are now $200, up from $150. Second offenses bring $375 penalties. Third and subsequent violations bring a $625 fine. Almost 5,000 crashes in Connecticut were linked to distracted driving during the year 2020, the Department of Transportation says. Electronic distracted driving is a moving violation in the state, with fines topping out at $625. Cell phone, texting updates: : Rhode Island's ban on handheld cell phone use goes into full effect June 1. Rhode Island previously prohibited texting while driving but not cell phone use. The law allows first-time violators a suspension of the $100 (maximum) fine if they show proof of acquiring a hands-free accessory. Gov. Gina Raimondo approved the legislation last July. Distracted driving update: Driver inattention continues to be a leading killer on New Jersey roads and highways. Numbers for 2021, released at the beginning of 2023, showed distracted driving was linked to 194 fatalities in the state.
